work in progress

Here’s a thing I’ve been working on for what seems like FOREVER

About 6-7 years ago I started work on a new Neon-Noir styled comic called The Fix. It was going to be set in the 80s, and feature some crossover into current reality, like a historical fiction. I’ve been messing with it here and there and revised it a number of times, but for some reason I just couldn’t get it right.

This was the last set of test images I was working on before I lost the motivation to continue. I was looking at doing something hyper-detailed, like Moebius or Geof Darrow, but I wasn’t sure if it worked or not. Everyone I’ve showed these tests to seemed really receptive to the look and the idea, but for some reason I didn’t think it was going to work. Maybe it was the fear of trying something new, I don’t know. But this is definitely a cool style and concept that I am thinking I will just plow forward on again.

Right now, I’m working on the script and how I’m going to deliver it. I’m also planning on this being penciled manually rather than digital, just to speed up the process (for me, anyway). Since I don’t own a fancy monitor/screen tablet and have to rely on a desktop version, there’s always going to be a bit of a disconnect between the eye/tablet/screen that you don’t get when drawing traditionally.

So far so good.

In other comics related news, Ed Cidade and I are thinking of rebooting Bison Bay and re-releasing it. I am working on preliminary visuals to see if they will translate better – more detail and better pacing.

Bison Bay was sort of a bridge between a new project and an old one, and unfortunately, BB ended up picking up some of the bad habits I had while doing El Cuervo. Later on in the run, things settled down, but I really didn’t like my own personal workflow and creative method and vowed to “fix” the issues that I felt were problematic. Due to a number of tragic circumstances, Ed and I decided to go on indefinite hiatus to focus our energies on more important things.

We are still committed to bringing the world of Bison Bay back to life. It’s just a matter of how and when.
